The committee purchased an 1800-square metre block on Garners Avenue. Building commenced in late 1920. Sir Walter Davidson, KCMG, governor of New South Wales, opened the building on 30 July 1921. Jackâs granddaughter Helen has vivid memories of the club. The original building centred on a very large hall able to accommodate over 300 people. They entered the hall through two large doors with glass panelling at the top. In the middle of the hall was a stage for musicians and concerts. Next to the stage was a door through to a big kitchen with a stove, fridge and lots of drawers and bench space for catering. Beyond the kitchen were several rooms for members only. There were billiard tables, a library, offices and a bar with tables and chairs where beer was sold and a very large trade was done after six oâclock closing.17
